Request uncontroversial deletion of a file I uploaded

Could an administrator please delete this: File:Insurgent Mexico.djvu

I uploaded it using an importer script. I believe due to an incorrect choice when using that tool, the pages are misaligned with the text layer. I'd like to re-import, but I can't do so unless this file is deleted. -Pete Forsyth (talk) 00:40, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

"Restrict MP3 uploads"

Hi, I think this file is in PD per imslp platform indications[1]. However, Upload Wizard would block my upload attempts with a "Restrict MP3 uploads" warning. Could you check it please ? Thanx +++ Archibald Tuttle (talk) 14:33, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi, and welcome. I am sorry to inform you that you have triggered Special:AbuseFilter/192 by trying to upload an mp3 file with insufficient rights. Too many people try to upload audio files that are still copyrighted by the authors, performers, recorders, publishing companies, etc. without proper licenses from those people. Please document fully the sources and licenses of your audio uploads, and request Autopatrol group membership at COM:RFR when you think you are ready (once you have made more than 500 useful non-botlike edits); having that should allow you to upload mp3 files. Until then, you may reencode the audio into Vorbis or Opus and upload it with full documentation as an .ogg or .oga file (or use any other format accepted per COM:FT#Sound).   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 14:36, 4 January 2024 (UTC)
@Archibald Tuttle: you are a bit short of the 500 edits, but it's clear that you know what you are doing. If you want to apply at Commons:Requests for rights#Autopatrol and explain why you'd like to slightly "jump the gun" on this, you'll probably be approved. - Jmabel ! talk 20:38, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

@Jmabel: No, the issue is not that important. Does it exist any general WM Commons policy regarding imslp audio files uploading ? Cheers Archibald Tuttle (talk) 21:27, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Import blocked by spam disallow list

Hello, I'm trying to move w:File:LyricWiki Main Page.png over from wikipedia to commons. However, when I try that, I get

"Import failed

The text you wanted to publish was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to a forbidden external site. The following text is what triggered our spam disallow list: lyricwiki.org."

Is this because there is "LyricWiki" in the title? I tried removing all "LyricWiki" mentions in the description and it still dosen't work. Can an admin move this over or help otherwise? Thanks. TheImaCow (talk) 20:43, 4 January 2024 (UTC)

Apparently sock puppet account

The User:Dandanfox should be blocked from uploading as a suckpuppet of User:末路百花残. Reasons:

  1. They are same in uploading infringing pictures of Chinese politicians.
  2. Once User:Dandanfox has uploaded one picture, the picture will be quickly added to any Chinese politician page on zhwiki, by User:末路百花残.

@Akishima Yuka: what is the problematic behavior here? (Not saying there isn't any, but what is it?) There is no rule against having more than one account as such, and certainly no rule against having one account on Commons and another on a different wiki. @Jeff G.: To what end? User:Jolenko1 is already globally indef-blocked as a sock. - Jmabel ! talk 18:39, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
In fairness, Jolenko1 and NutcrackerMoench were not blocked on the Commons at the time Jeff G. made that comment. Jmabel's underlying concern, however, remains correct: both accounts were already blocked on en.wiki wiki (02:38, 9 January 2024 and 02:34, 9 January 2024, respectively) and indeed with rationales including "{{checkuserblock-account}}". This is exactly where Drmies should have posted (per COM:RFCU: "Checkuser is a last resort for difficult cases; pursue other options first, such as posting on the administrator's noticeboard" (link in original)). The (terse) referral to RFCU was not appropriate for this case. Эlcobbola talk 18:58, 9 January 2024 (UTC)
@Эlcobbola: Drmies asked for [use of the] "CU tool" and did not mention having already CU'd and blocked the users on enwiki. I'm sorry I took them at face value. Now, I see that their enwiki user page is categorized in en:Category:Wikipedians who should probably stop screwing around with categories, lest they draw unwanted attention from the Categories Police.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 15:58, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
And? You give more weight to a section header than COM:RFCU guidance? You give more weight to en.wiki user page categorization than user rights? (Drmies is a CU (!!!)) How do you reconcile "I confirmed that the 'other' contributor on that page, Jolenko1, is now also confirmed and blocked on en-wiki" (underline added) with your purport "Drmies [...] did not mention having already CU'd and blocked the users on enwiki"? Did you even read the comment, or just hastily and mechanically refer them to RFCU? 16:10, 10 January 2024 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by elcobbola (talk • contribs)
@Эlcobbola: I'm sorry, I didn't check their credentials on enwiki before making my initial reply. It looked like they were a regular enwiki user who had checked that two users we share with enwiki were blocked there and wanted Admins and Checkusers here to do something about it. They did not write that they had done the CU and blocking themselves. I read things literally and take things at face value until evidence convinces me otherwise.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 22:45, 10 January 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: Sorry, I don't see them as being "globally indef-blocked as a sock." (whatever that means), or locked, either.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 16:02, 10 January 2024 (UTC)

Hiding history/File History edit

Hello there, as per request on my discussion at Slovak Wikipedia, I would like to ask, if it is possible to hide the original author's name on this file. This information is supposedly not correct and the author does not wish for their name to appear in there. (If necessary, I can ask the person to write it to us through OTRS.) The information appears correctly in the Summary, but lists the original author's name in the Comment in File History. Thank you for the response. (Also please if possible, @ me, just in case.) Contest score review

Hi, I opened a topic in the scores discussion page named "Ai images?" For the monthly photo challenge of November named "Bicycle". I ask the review of a picture posted..this is one picture that was placed in of the winning ones, that imho could be considered maybe a computer generated image. I am not sure 100% so I won't cast any finger until you tell me if it's fair what I am asking here. Is in my rights to ask the review of a picture for checking if it's really a photo or a Ai image? What can we do if one of us has this doubt? And if it's a Ai, why has not been identified as Ai picture ? And let win? I apologise in advance if this comes as inappropriate but after all our previous discussion I believe it makes sense. The pic looks not a picture taken by a human, hence I am sure I have at least the right to ask for a review. Thanks Oncewerecolours (talk) 06:28, 11 January 2024 (UTC)

I read here https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Bicycle_at_evening_sunset.jpg that the image has been already nominated for deletion. I think it's fair. I am fine with that , sorry i didnt see that post. However I hope that real "photos" only will be allowed in the photography contests for the future. Inscrutable revisions by a user

I have no clue why, but Fry1989 (talk · contributions · Move log · block log · uploads · Abuse filter log keeps on changing a sort key from the useful "Variations" to just "V" for no discernible reason. E.g. https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category%3ASVG_variations_on_flags_of_Western_Sahara&diff=841185764&oldid=823447654 Is there something I'm missing here? Do we have a local policy that we should only use a single letter for sort keys or something? —Justin (koavf)TCM 21:53, 13 January 2024 (UTC)

@Koavf I have no clue why this is being done either. I see no need to jump to AN; asking on their talk page should have been sufficient. But since we're already here, I've notified Fry on their talk page for you, as is required. —‍Mdaniels5757 (talk • contribs) 22:43, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
I apologize: you're correct that escalating here is skipping a step or two and I also didn't post about this thread as well. I thought I had post to his talk several weeks ago when this nonsense started, but I was mistaken. Pardon me. —Justin (koavf)TCM 22:46, 13 January 2024 (UTC)
Do we have a policy of using a single letter? No. Do we have a policy of using a full word either? Also no. The question should not be why I shortened it. I did so as part of a much wider categorisation drive affecting hundreds of related categories. The question should be why Koavf is so insistent that a single letter is insufficient. Except where very specific sortkeying is required, a single letter is generally sufficient and that remains my position. Category:SVG flags of Western Sahara only has the one subcategory, the sortkey does not need to be so precise. The letter V accurately sorts Category:SVG variations on flags of Western Sahara under the letter V. Maybe if it had to compete with several other categories and V alone caused them to fall out of alphabetical order, using a full sortkey would make more sense, but it does not as of now. There is also the case of Koavf having insulted me. Fry1989 eh? 17:14, 14 January 2024 (UTC)
if i understand mediawiki correctly, the two ways of sorting here are essentially:
  • VariationsSVG variations on flags of Western Sahara
  • VSVG variations on flags of Western Sahara
as this user has pointed out, "Maybe if it had to compete with several other categories and V alone caused them to fall out of alphabetical order..."
it's more natural to sort with the full word. any benefit a single letter has, the full word has, but the single letter cannot pre-empt potential future confusion. RZuo (talk) 17:22, 14 January 2024 (UTC)

Protected edit requests is backlogged

Category:Commons protected edit requests is significantly backlogged, to the extent that a request I made to correct a factual error in the caption of File:JAPAN AIRLINES A350-941 JA13XJ HND 30-APR-2022.jpg (which was protected due to appearing on the main page of multiple Wikipedias) went unanswered for over 11 days. The protection has since expired so I've made the change myself, and luckily the error wasn't particularly consequential, but this is not always going to be the case. Picking one request at random, File talk:PL road sign T-34.svg has been awaiting administrator attention for nearly five years. The Mental Health Resource Center launched in August 2023. The goal is to review the comments and suggestions to improve the Mental Health Resource Center each quarter. As there have not been many comments yet, I’d like to invite you to provide comments and resource suggestions as you are able to do so on the Mental Health Resource Center talk page. The hope is this resource expands over time to cover more languages and cultures. Thank you! Best, JKoerner (WMF) (talk) 21:05, 18 January 2024 (UTC)

This is a meta question on where to position a much larger text about a serious fake problem we have

Very short: Since some months, I have come across a larger number of fakes/faux/phantasy-augmented uploaded political symbols, flags etc. (worse: produced in good faith, most likely) which are to a large part very hard to identify as such and are also not marked - hence many seem to be real. The majority of PD-algorithm uploads by new users aren't AI. What should we do about it?

I've been working through the results of abuse filter 298 and the overwhelming majority of uploads are not AI art. Working through the last 500 or so (from January 12 through today), my back of the envelope estimate is:

  • 85% are non-AI images where the uploader is not the creator. These have been or will shortly be deleted as copyvios/no source/no permission.
  • 5% are non-AI images where the uploader is the creator. These often have both PD-algo and another license until either they or a patroller fix the file page.
  • 5% are non-AI images where the uploader is not the creator, but the file can be kept because of PD-textlogo, PD-old, etcetera.
  • 5% are actually AI images.

Making matters worse, a lot of the AI images that are uploaded by new users aren't within scope. There is lots of debate about AI images and scope in DRs, but there's broad agreement that files with rendering issues so bad that the files can't be used on sister projects are generally out of scope, and a lot of the uploads are things like this clock with two Xs or this illustration of Shakespeare where none of the anatomy, architecture, or text makes sense.

On the one hand, Filter 298 is working exactly as intended, as patrollers are able to use it to neutralize a large amount of copyvios. On the other hand, I suspect that most of the time, people are just clicking the checkbox in the upload wizard because it's there and lets uploaders bypass having to answer other questions about the file's authorship. It being a prominent default option may be doing more harm than good.

Should we remove the AI checkbox from the upload wizard or delay where/change how AI can be selected as an option there? The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 06:00, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

That's as clear-cut a case as there could possibly be. 95% incorrect, and much of that 5% useless. The AI checkbox should be removed from Upload Wizard entirely, or at least heavily restricted (30/500 would be my vote). Pi.1415926535 (talk) 06:37, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

@Pi.1415926535: still, if it is (as seems to be indicated above) an 85% accurate predictor of copyvios, it might be worth having. Sort of like the discovery of penicillin. - Jmabel ! talk 00:19, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
FWIW, I've noticed this as well from patrolling Special:NewFiles with no consideration of edit filters--erroneous PD-algorithm claims have become very common. In case it's related, there has also been a noticeable increase in bogus {{PD-USGov}} claims--not the typical federal v. state conflation, but use with images that have no relationship to any government entity (e.g., movie posters, random Internet images, etc.) Whatever change was made to the UploadWizard should be reconsidered. Has there even been a serious discussion as to how to organize the contributions of flickr users?

Has there even been a serious discussion as to how to organize the contributions of flickr users?

I can't remember when I started following the examples of other contributiors, and putting images from prolific flickr users into categories like: Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream. It seemed like these could be useful categories, as those flickr people kept making new images available under free licences. So, I started creating new categories, of the form Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream.

Then I noticed that some people had started to move categories of the form Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream to Category:Photographs from jqpublic. They were doing so:

  1. Without citing a policy, guideline, or discussion.
  2. Without using {{Category redirect}} to make the old category point to the new one.

In my opinion, this was never a good idea, for several reasons.

Some prolific photographers, including myself, have directly uploaded some of our images directly from our homes, have had some of our images uploaded from flickr, and have ho other images uploaded from other sites, like Panoramia. I'm an example. In my own case I think the best organization would have been to have had Category:Files from booledozer flickrstream and Category:Files from old York guy Panoramia stream be subcategories of Category:Photographs from Geo Swan. Category:Photographs from Geo Swan should not contain images that are in its subcatories.

I think I have seen other categories structures, for flickr users, in parallel, or in competition with the Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream hierarchy.

Influential Unix Guru Henry Spencer had a button he wore to Unix conferences that said, "The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many different ones to choose among.". Truer words were never spoken. We should have one standard for how ot categorize photos from flickr users.

My apologies if this has already been discussed, and settled, and I just couldn't find that guideline.

and now, what to do about it?

Ted Nelson said that the purpose of computers is human freedom. Sorting photos from flickr, or at least those that were properly uploaded to use standard information templates, should have an author field that contains a link to the original flickr person's original flickr-ID. And we could set a robot to work that could work quietly, in the background, and take care of making sure every image from flickr was in the category we agreed upon. Is there some reason we haven't done this? Geo Swan (talk) 02:53, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

At least one reason would be that I, for one, don't want a category that somehow singles out which of my images came from Flickr, and I suspect I'm not alone in that. (If there are no significant number of others who feel that way, I guess I'll yield, but I've always tried to avoid having what seem to me to be "vanity categories" for my photos. The only one at all that I have is a user category for my few videos, just because I wanted to have easy access to them myself.) - Jmabel ! talk 03:43, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
  • I too didn't, initially, start a category for my flickr images, out of modesty. I think that is what you are saying here, right?
But, a Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream should transclude {{Flickr user}}, and so supply links to jqpublic's flickr photostream, and to their albums. That link to their albums is extremely useful. Many flickr contributors have some albums of private events, like birthday parties, that include few, or zero, in scope images, while other albums to exotic locations, are packed full of in-scope images. It's possible your flickr albums, similarly, are a mix of highly in-scope images, and less useful images, or images of no use whatsoever.
If modesty is your concern, could you allow the rest of us to take advantage of the album sorting you already engaged in, so we can pick from your most useful photos?
Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 05:16, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
Anything on my Flickr stream that I consider likely to belong on Commons (about 10,000 images) is on Commons. Some of the rest I have not licensed in a way compatible with Commons (either because it is more personal, would not meet Commons' strict scrutiny on derivative work, or because when similar materials made their way to Commons I disliked the objectifying categories added to the images); the remainder because either they are artistic rather than documentary images, or if I took (say) 70 pictures at a concert by a band, there might be a couple that I thought were worth having on Commons, but I put the whole batch on Flickr. I know there are people who are so inclusionist they'd want every damn shot I took to be here on Commons, but I don't see any reason to encourage them.
For work I've put on both sites, it's close to random which they go on first. For work I first uploaded there I usually (though not always) do any copy with Flickr2Commons and then use VFC to batch-edit them to say something like "author=Joe Mabel, on Flickr as Joe Mabel from Seattle, US"; if I do a completely separate upload here but I did an earlier upload to Flickr then I'll credit along the lines of "Joe Mabel; first uploaded to Flickr on account Joe Mabel" so no one can mistake it for a copyvio. So I'm not hiding my Flickr account at all. I just don't see any reason to have a giant category (or several) for my work. - Jmabel ! talk 07:30, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
  • Thanks for the clarification.
Do you agree that anyone who moves a category like Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream to Category:Photographs from jqpublic really should leave a redirect? Should a category like Category:Photographs from jqpublic transclude {{Flickr user}}?
Once there is a consensus over how flickr images from prolific flickr users should be categorized, do you agree we should set a robot to make sure all of those flickr images get put in that specific category? It is currently well below 50 percent, maybe below 20%. Geo Swan (talk) 14:54, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
I really have very little opinion on setting up categories for non-notable photographers. I'm not opposed to it, but I'd never put any effort into it. - Jmabel ! talk 22:15, 30 January 2024 (UTC)
@Geo Swan: There was a discussion at Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/08/Category:Files transferred from Flickr user rodrigoparedes. Now, it looks like I transferred all 1129 photos in Category:Photographs by Rodrigo Paredes; I only transferred 931 of them, and I am not happy about the difference (files transferred by Sturm). Category:Photographs by Flickr photographer is organized with differentiation by photographer fullname. Category:Files transferred by User:Jeff G. from Flickr is currently haphazard, sorry (my Category:Files transferred from Flickr user governadoreduardocampos was renamed to Category:Files from governadoreduardocampos Flickr stream as the result of Commons:Categories for discussion/2020/08/Category:Files transferred from Flickr user governadoreduardocampos based on names in Category:Flickr streams after I had created that cat and Category:Files transferred from Flickr user rodrigoparedes). Category:Flickr streams has 12 subcats (including Category:Photographs by Flickr photographer) and is also organized with differentiation by Flickr shortname.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 19:57, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
Summary, so far...
  1. Okay, so, I think no one has defended the practice of moving a category full of images to a new name, without leaving a redirect.
  2. I don't think anyone has defended the claim that there was a policy, guideline, or meaningful consensus to move categories like Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream to new names, like Category:Photographs from jqpublic.
  3. I said the {{Flickr user}} template is extremely useful, if you are a fan of a flickr user's photos, if you think additional albums of theirs might contain more in scope images. However, I asserted the {{Flickr user}} template didn't belong on categories like Category:Photographs from jqpublic, that could contain images from jqpublic from other sites, or that they uploaded themselves, directly from their camera or memory stick. No one else has weighed in on this issue.
  4. I am going to repeat what Unix Guru Henry Spencer said, "The wonderful thing about standards is that there are so many different ones to choose among.". I am going to repeat we should not have two different ways for naming these categories.
    1. I think categories like Category:Files from jqpublic Flickr stream were here first.
    2. I think there are more categories full of flickr images of this form than there are of categories like Category:Photographs from jqpublic.
    3. It seems no one ever made a specific attempt to explain why the "photographs from" category names should replace the more specific category names...

Victorian Turkish baths

Is there by some chance an admin (or other experienced user) with either knowledge of or interest in Victorian Turkish baths who might take over at Commons:Categories for discussion/2024/02/Category:Victorian Turkish baths? We seem to have a user who is a legitimate subject matter expert, but with very little knowledge of Commons. We need someone who can either guide him through properly setting up this category (and possibly subcategories) or just take over and do it themself (or somewhere between the two). I'm the one who noticed the problematic category, but I don't think I bring more to this than a random knowledgeable Commons user. Thanks in advance. - Jmabel ! talk 03:14, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

Inappropriate caption

(Copied from COM:Village pump)

Last week, IP user User:196.188.120.153 edited the English caption for File:Ethiopia Plate of portable altar.jpg to say "ITS OFFENSIVE AND WILL BE PUNISHED". This is clearly not acceptable, but I'm not sure what should be done. There are religious sensibilities involved here. For some context, see this discussion on the English Wikipedia help desk, and recent edit summaries in https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Tabot&action=history .--ColinFine (talk) 15:26, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

I've reverted the text. I would suggest protecting the page and asking the IP editor to maybe discuss this reasonably first, or else simply blocking any suitable IP space. We might question how important it is to test someone's religious sensibilities like this, but "WILL BE PUNISHED" is a clear threat and I'm tired of those. We work by debate here (as badly as we are at that), not religious dogma. Andy Dingley (talk) 17:00, 31 January 2024 (UTC)
I'd been wondering about that image, as well as File:Äthiopien_Tabot_Linden-Museum_90290.jpg, for reasons I've explained at the English Wikipedia help desk (linked above). I will note that this artifact no longer appears in the MNW's collection, or at least not via its website (link). -- Gyrofrog (talk) 17:27, 31 January 2024 (UTC)

If we want to generate a template for this (e.g. Template:Religious sensitivities), this might be an appropriate image for the left side of the template. It is legible at the relevant size:

Yeah, I can see a warning about religious sensitivities being useful. Abzeronow (talk) 21:58, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
To go one more step: a warning template like this would probably be a good thing, but there is really no admin issue here. - Jmabel ! talk 02:02, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Getting further afield from the original captioning issue, I'd suggest there could/should be a licensing issue for images of objects with dubious provenance. As of yet I'm unable to find any relevant policy, guideline, or consensus. I know this isn't the place for discussing that, but where is it? COM:VP? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 14:14, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Gyrofrog: I'm not sure what you are driving at. Commons doesn't normally refuse in-scope images for non-copyright reasons. There are a lot of objects of questionable provenance in a lot of museums. That may be an issue for ownership of the object, but not for an image. - 19:53, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
@Jmabel: What I'm getting at is that if an object is (for example) war loot, and the museum where it's located puts it on display, then without clearer/better provenance, taking a picture of it and asserting "public domain" (or some Creative Commons license etc.) becomes problematic. Perhaps not legally problematic (or perhaps it is?), but ethically. I'm imagining a scenario where someone borrows an exotic sports car, then finds out the person who loaned out the car smuggled it in & that the car may have been stolen in the first place. But then the driver keeps borrowing the car (and then loans it out for a photo shoot). In some places, that's legal; I'd argue that it's wrong, anywhere. Again, this probably isn't the place for it... I guess I'll take this to COM:VP. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 20:03, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
Problematic, but not a copyright issue. - Jmabel ! talk 20:13, 2 February 2024 (UTC)

@AntiCompositeBot is malfunctioning. It's trying to find files those foes not contain copright info, but it looks at only templates and this results to wrong alarms for example look at the history of File:Letters SVG?2Esvg.png (please don't say something like "that's a bad filename", i explained the reason in the file page). I didn't put a copyright template to that page because i can't found a suitable template (the template that's added by the wizard is unsuitable).  Not done The MediaWiki software (and bots) can only detect the presence of a license when it's a defined license template. For this reason, plaintext is not suitable for licensing. If you have not made substantial changes to a file, then you should simply copy the license from the original image.
I have deleted this particular file as an unneeded and unused duplicate. Unless there are on-wiki rendering issues with an SVG, we don't need a (almost unusably tiny) PNG copy generated from the SVG. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:03, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

Unless there is a specific on-wiki use case (such as the known text rendering bugs), there is rarely a need to create a PNG copy of an existing SVG file. The MediaWiki software generates PNG versions of all SVG files (which any external reuser can use). Your file had no valid on-wiki use, especially at such a small size that pixelation was obvious. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 00:16, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
I can read the text says "SVG" easily. MW engine cannot generate thumbnails smaller than 2kb in most cases. Most of icons are in much smaller resolutions. This file is not very important for me but i think that's weird.
Anyway, i think plain text licenses can be determined by robots. For example, if there's a phrase like "public domain" i think bots can consider the file as publicdomain. RuzDD (talk) 00:21, 8 February 2024 (UTC)
  1. @RuzDD: A bot cannot readily tell the difference between "this file is in the public domain" and (for example) "this file derives from several sources, some of which are in the public domain" etc. There is no way it can be programmed to always pick up context.
  2. You've repeatedly complained about how mediawiki renders PNG from SVG, and repeatedly been told there is a consensus to the contrary, and that if you want to change this you are going to have to change the consensus, not make ad hoc files on your own. I believe last time this came up you were told to take your case to Commons:Village pump/Technical. - Jmabel ! talk 01:44, 8 February 2024 (UTC)

I requested deletion of a file in error. The file is https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Windermere_on_the_Mount_-_London,_ON_6-07-17_2-56-47_PM.jpg. I thought it was not in the public domain, but I see that the user who uploaded it was the creator. Please accept my apologies and do not delete this file. Thank you. @Abzeronow: That editor opened their account three days ago and has been busy nominating for deletion valid files uploaded from the Sisters of St. Joseph Flicker account. @Magnolia677: She's the archivist there; they inadvertently had put a bunch of "orphaned" files on Flickr, not understanding that if you don't know who took the photo, that doesn't mean you can publish it. Other people uploaded them to Commons based on this accidental Flickrwashing. Please take up any discusssion of this at Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada, where I've consolidated these requests. - Jmabel ! talk 02:04, 11 February 2024 (UTC)

I have set up Commons:Deletion requests/Files from Congregation of Sisters of St. Joseph in Canada to bring all of these discussions together, and on Commons:Deletion requests/2024/02/10 and Commons:Deletion requests/2024/02/11 I've grouped the 100+ separate requests into collapsible areas. If someone else could close those 100+ separate requests as superseded by the centralized discussion, that would be good. Or if you think there is a better way to do it (redirection maybe?) that's fine, too I've now worked on this for several hours, it is Saturday evening, and I have plans in the material world.

I guess it's functioning like a trap question in a survey. When we get an obviously false response to an easy question, that's a strong signal that the user may also be wrong about the other things they've said. Belbury (talk) 17:15, 12 February 2024 (UTC)
Эlcobbola talk 19:33, 1 February 2024 (UTC)
Bumping. The Squirrel Conspiracy (talk) 07:49, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Yes, this is an issue, but more general than only miss-tagging files. How do we prevent people from uploading copyright violations and out-of-scope images? It is much better that copyvios are uploaded without any license, than with a wrong license. Yann (talk) 09:59, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
We still can't change the fact that people can't read, ignore multiple texts, and deliberately lie by checking the checkmark where they confirm they filled in the form correctly and aren't uploading copyrighted material. Previously the file would be uploaded as CC-BY-SA and would also end up in a big backlog. I think the UploadWizard is clear enough. Sjoerd de Bruin (talk) 13:04, 7 February 2024 (UTC)
Hi all, just to let you know that I followed very closely the discussion. We'll investigate and see if the formulation needs improving, or if people are deliberately choosing the wrong license for reasons that are not linked to wording. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 15:21, 12 February 2024 (UTC)

Artwork uploaded to Commons now used as fact

Apollo-11 stone slab

The modern artwork shown is a misinterpretation by the modern artist of an antelope as a predator. The correct images can be seen in this screendump from a recent study. The file is unfortunately used all over the place now as an example of prehistoric art, which amounts to disinformation. I have removed the link to the file from some articles, but really, this image should be removed as misleading. It may even be a subtle trolling of the wikipedia system.

Hello and thank you for your precious help. It is possible to delete a photo, it's just CC license witch is not.
See What happens if the author decides to revoke the CC license to material I am using? The CC licenses are irrevocable. This means that once you receive material under a CC license, you will always have the right to use it under those license terms, even if the licensor changes his or her mind and stops distributing under the CC license terms. Of course, you may choose to respect the licensor’s wishes and stop using the work.

Trigger of filter 290 while trying to upload new version of file

Christian Michelides (talk) 15:24, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

@Christian Michelides: "Pictures of mine" - does it refer to the images that you have captured? If there are considerable images, I suggest sending an email to COM:VRT, in which you release those files under a CC-BY-SA or any such license, and also seek creation of a template that the mentioned user can use on the files. However, if the files are very few, I feel going through such a procedure is unwarranted, and a statement anywhere on Commons should be sufficient. Even this one, but a mention of the license is necessary. How many files do you have and is this is a one-time process or something that will remain "ongoing"? Best regards, ─ Aafī (talk) 16:34, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Images from the above three editors, using 3 different cameras but all taken mid-February 2024, are being used to promote on en-wiki, fr-wiki, wq, wikidata, and here a Wordpress website called AlHakawi News, its owner/publisher, and an Egyptian business Al-Agha Group he also heads. About a deletion request

Hi. A few days ago I applied for speedy deletion of an image that I had uploaded years ago and as I noticed recently, possible copyright violation. It was deemed not to meet the criteria for speedy deletion and sent for deletion request process. After seven days I asked to close the discussion to proceed with the deletion. The admin said that since the image is being used externally, this is a problem and did not delete it. I read the policy and process (Deletion policy, Deletion requests) and did not find such a problem mentioned in cases of deletion requests. What is going on and what can I do from now on? IM-yb (talk) 16:53, 3 March 2024 (UTC)

I can see you haven't answered what @Abzeronow asked over there, "Can you find details about the 1987 renovation? The photograph would have to show a significant portion of the 1987 renovation to be deleted. Also this was originally built in 1836, and de:Wilhelm von Weiler died in 1878"? This is a legitimate question and per se not a "denial" and you have not attempted to clarify it. ─ Aafī (talk) 17:26, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
IM-yb is talking about a discussion he's had with Turelio on their talk page. I just put in that comment since I am trying to help determine what the actual copyright status is of the building shown in the photograph. Abzeronow (talk) 17:32, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
@Aafī the question was asked after I first created the discussion here. Thanks anyway. IM-yb (talk) 17:44, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
@IM-yb: The answer would still be relevant.   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 18:59, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
So far, we have found evidence that suggests the 1987 renovation removed a staircase to a side door (and the side door may have been removed). The main entrance and ramp appear to be similar to as they were before 1987 as shown by 1940s photographs, the 1899 renovation appears to have been more significent as far as the exterior, but that might be covered by PD-old-assumed since there doesn't appear to be any information on who did the 1899 renovation. So it looks like it will come down to whether the changes from 1987 are de minimis or not. Abzeronow (talk) 19:08, 3 March 2024 (UTC)
In addition to the above, additional changes have been identified on the facade of the building, specifically in the center (covering of an inscription with elements of purple color, shutters removal, replacement of wall with railings and conversion of a mullioned window into a vaulted one). Overall so far, architectural interventions have been identified on the facade of the building on all three floors, which have obviously changed the image of the building compared to the past. Especially the vaulted window in the center reflects the intellectual work of the creator of the 1987 renovation. In any case, since I am now the only participant in the deletion request discussion, how many months can a deletion request discussion be kept open? Can it last for years? IM-yb (talk) 13:56, 5 March 2024 (UTC)
Deletion requests can last any time from seven days (usually the simple ones are resolved quickly) to months. I imagine that given the progress in how the backlog has been reduced to just December and January, it's possible the DR will be closed within this month. I am still a participant in the DR (I forgot to comment on it yesterday, I'll do so later if I have time.) Abzeronow (talk) 17:33, 5 March 2024 (UTC)

I have provided new evidence and sources, which I think leave no doubt about the outcome of the deletion request. Please take into account and when possible proceed with the procedures. IM-yb (talk) 16:43, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Could someone take a look and take action as appropriate? I created a deletion request instead of tagging as copyvios as I haven't found the source for many of the images. It seems that the uploader thinks that any image that is "publicly available on the internet" is "Public Domain" and has uploaded them here as PD-US. Since most of these are outright copyvios, could an admin take a look? Thanks —SpacemanSpiff 12:10, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

Flickr Review Bot has broken down

Dear Admins, The Flickr review bot has broken down since early March 9, 2024 and the Flickr review Backlog is more than 8000+ images now.

User Zhuyifei1999 who used the run the flickr bot left WikiCommons in March 2023. Perhaps, someone else can fix the bot? Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 21:09, 10 March 2024 (UTC)

  • I hope so. Because an Admin like Turelio or Taivo cannot review 8,000 images. Only a bot can. --Leoboudv (talk) 01:26, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
did get another developer to get it to run but yeah, same issue, it needs new maintainers who understand how the bot works...seeing that its the same bug as last time, I have to assume it has something to do with a recent flickr api issue which also affected UploadWizard/Flickr last month. Unless its fixed, it might keep stopping a lot more now. Personally i think a long term solution would be to limit "mass uploads" from flickr (single uploads is fine) by users with minimal access which includes "auto confirmed"....as i have said many times, 90% of images added from flickr are not needed here..some users just mass upload to increase edit counts and nothing more as majority of those images will never ever be used by anyone and a lot more fails inclusion criteria and might even fail local FoP too as well as personality rights....Hopefully this can be discussed one day and a solution found... Stemoc 16:05, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
I don't think Flickr images do any harm here except in the cases you mention, those that fail local FOP. Bedivere (talk) 17:38, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
yeah but commons is not a repository, i was looking at the over 9000 (sorry) images that were not reviewed when the bot was down and nearly all of them were unnecessary, if we can put a strong policy on this, next time the bot goes down, 10 licence reviewers will be easily able to review the images because we won't have that many images to review....If we can limit who mass uploads, we can control which types of images are added on the project as well, this ensures we don't have to report/remove images added from flickr which qualifies under the licences but not under certain copyrights including FoP etc.. Stemoc 17:55, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
Or you know. You could just kindly ask said users to refrain from Flickr uploads for the time being Trade (talk) 23:51, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
I tend to agree with Stemoc here. We don't want a bunch of noneducational vacation photos or more duplicates of photos that we already have. Abzeronow (talk) 17:57, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
Certainly. Maybe we could restrict the importing of photos by individuals and continue to allow bulk uploads from non-profits, organisations and government accounts on Flickr. Bedivere (talk) 18:00, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
I've never understood why we (Commons) hasn't restricted bulk Flickr uploads. I would support any proposal to do so. Bidgee (talk) 00:48, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
Thank you, Stemoc! Is there any documentation or a link to a page that explains what bug is affecting the bot? // sikander { talk } 🦖 18:06, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
since Flickreviewr is basically a bot running on a python script, there might be an issue with the script itself, might need an update due to recent changes in the flickr api..again i'm not sure if a recent change in the Flickr api caused this but when it went down last time, the last few images it passed were marked "public domain" and again when it went down a few days ago, it as reviewing images marked public domain too, maybe its hitting some bug related to that and then coming to a full stop, not sure..I'm more of a "script kiddie" so don't understand much python but this is the wikitech:Nova_Resource:Tools.yifeibot/SAL log generated by wikitech for Flickreviewr Bot.. Stemoc 18:47, 11 March 2024 (UTC)
@Stemoc: Unfortunately it looks like the bot is stuck again. I know Python and can help figure out bugs, but is this bot open source? Tried to look for code repo but can't find any info about it. // sikander { talk } 🦖 23:07, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
    @Sikander: User:FlickreviewR 2/flickreviewr.py might help. ─ Aafī (talk) 01:43, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
you can downlaod the latest version of the script from toolforge , a dev is looking into this but again this is a commons problem possibly and maybe someone well versed in python as well as templates used here and flickr api can figure out the issue.. Stemoc 02:57, 13 March 2024 (UTC)

Problematic additions of checksums by IP 38.42.62.122

Dear admins, please take a look at the contributions of IP 38.42.62.122. Between October and December 2023, this IP has added structured data “Checksum” entries to misc. images. But often these checksums conflict with already present reliable checksums; sometimes the IP has added 5 or so different checksums to the same image (which is absurd – when using the same determination method, an image should always have a single checksum), and the IP has never added the important “determination method” qualifier. Some other edits are obvious nonsense – the IP has set the structured data “depicts” (P180) value of this photo six times to “checksum“ (Q218341). Therefore I get the impression that most or all of these “Checksum” entries are just nonsense. Please check this. If you get the same impression, please consider to revert all not yet reverted changes made by that IP in that timeframe. Thank you very much! – Aristeas (talk) 13:11, 26 March 2024 (UTC)

I'm going to proceed with reverting these changes. In addition to the issues you've already pointed out, in at least one instance the IP added the exact same checksum to two different files: Special:Diff/816711640, Special:Diff/816760347.
The checksum (P4092) property should not generally be used on Commons images. There's no mechanism for keeping it in sync with modifications to images, nor does it fulfill any technical needs on the site. Omphalographer (talk) 01:57, 27 March 2024 (UTC)

"Cleanup" on speedy deletion requests

Do administrators appreciate this type of cleanup: [4] [5]? Personally, I think it deletes the detailed explanation I gave for the edit and I asked @Johnj1995: to stop doing it, but I vaguely recall he already ignored my request in the past. Enhancing999 (talk) 23:35, 30 March 2024 (UTC)

It is very unhelpful for such edits, both unnecessary and interfering; almost akin to edit warring if there is no conversation about why they are making those changes. Admins can work out what to do, and the explanation is always helpful to assist in that process. We do wish to continue to have category redirects where helpful, so the history is much better. Johnj1995 please stop that practice, better to converse with the editor than just apply your PoV; if in disagreement, then append your {{Bad name}} rather than overwrite.  Not done. The photos have been for years in Commons and one week more or less does not mean anything. One week is needed to determine corresponding or non-corresponding to project scope requirements. Taivo (talk) 10:07, 31 March 2024 (UTC)

Where are we with the scope of computer algorithm or artificial intelligence generated works?

I will admit to not having paid much attention to computer algorithm or artificial intelligence generated works. Now I am starting to see them uploaded by those who are not contributors (and some as CoI and as spam), and some using them for articles. Have we had a discussion about how these fit within scope. I can understand if they are straight to the topic, however, in the cases I am seeing they are generated solely to colour an article so are more like personal artworks that people have created than what I consider truly educational. => Commons:Project scope

If we have discussed, can someone please point me to our consensus, or some good discussions that we have had to help managed deletion discussions. Thanks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:34, 1 April 2024 (UTC)

I will note that my nomination at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Meiteilon Ima — Divine Motherly Personification of Classical Meitei Language — AKA Maheigi Lairembi (Goddess of books, education, enlightenment, knowledge, learning, letters, mastery, philosophy, scholarship, science, skill, wi will require interpretation of scope, OR it may well require to purposefully narrow or expand our scope following the discussion.  — billinghurst sDrewth 07:52, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
Noting the essay Com:AI-generated media.  — billinghurst sDrewth 08:06, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
If a file is in use, then it is in scope. But I would strongly advise other projects against using AI-generated images, except in a few cases. Yann (talk) 08:40, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
@Yann: AI-generated has come well after Commons inclusion policy and did not account for it, and we need to have our eyes wide open when we make that assessment and that determination. When does it become real vs fanasty about what is included? If the community thinks that it is that binary, then so be it.  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:57, 2 April 2024 (UTC)

The original file name is Flag of Ratnasambhava.svg. This file is part of a series, the file name has been changed without the author's permission. Please change the file name back. Thyj (talk) 13:36, 5 April 2024 (UTC)

I have reverted the move. However, you can request it in the page itself. Pinging @Mateus2019 to give an explanation for this move. Bedivere (talk) 15:52, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
I did it because of the category (have thought the category was correct). The proposal was done by Djampa ("It has been suggested by Djampa ... that this media object be renamed to “File:Flag of Ākāśagarbha.svg” or another more suitable name". [6] I know him since 2008 for c. 154,979 good edits. The proposal also matched with the category "Ākāśagarbha". I go through the file history before moving, if facts are doubious (red user name, strange name proposal). BTW: The uploader (not Thyj) is inactive sine 2009 (so "changed without the author's permission" is not really true. A person cannot give a permission when he terminated his activity years earlier). --Mateus2019 (talk) 17:19, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
The uploader is actually alternate account of me, but it is no longer in use. Thyj (talk) 02:06, 6 April 2024 (UTC)

Alachuckthebuck

Alachuckthebuck (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · edit filter log · block user · block log) User Alachuckthebuck locked in Enwiki indefinitly as sock: Special:CentralAuth/Alachuckthebuck. On Commons user Alachuckthebuck deals exclusively with copyright trolling, no own uploads Special:ListFiles/Alachuckthebuck. For example, he demands VRT-confirmations from user VladimirPF (I know VladimirPF IRL, he is real man with photocamera) on photos, which made by VladimirPF with their own camera and uploaded in full resolution with a saved EXIF: User_talk:VladimirPF#Статус_изображения_File:Soap_dish_of_Novogrudok_Metal_Products_Plant_(6)_03.jpg. + trolling after explanations.

Lesless (talk) 05:36, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

@Lesless: Hi,
We don't block accounts on Commons solely because they were blocked on another project. As long as Alachuckthebuck uses only one account on Commons, and does that following Commons policies, we are fine. I don't see the name of another account of which Alachuckthebuck would be a sockpuppet. If there is any evidence, we can run a request for check user. Any idea? Yann (talk) 09:21, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
I can tell you right now, I have never made any edit to commons that wasn't on this account. This user removed the VRT tags from images I had tagged as no permission, so asked for the uploader to send an email to vrt verifying they were his. the rest of the story is on Vladimir's talk page.
All the best - Chuck Talk 15:43, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
For what. Lesless (talk) 17:00, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
No action needed unless evidence that Alachuckthebuck has been socking here arises or is presented, which to date hasn't. Bedivere (talk) 17:01, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Is illegal VRT demands not enough? Lesless (talk) 17:06, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Of course @Alachuckthebuck should be more careful when tagging files with permission needed. These are obviously files by Vladimir. EXIF shared with previous photos. Bedivere (talk) 17:16, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Thx, and this was obvious from the very beginning. Nevertheless, Alachuckthebuck insisted (and now continues to insist) and has already reached the point of trolling. Lesless (talk) 17:25, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Lesless, I don't see you bringing up this issue with them on their talk page. From my interactions with Alachuckthebuck, they seem to be acting in good faith, although some of their actions are clumsy. You should remember Hanlon's Razor (and COM:AGF). Abzeronow (talk) 17:53, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
Everything would have been so if he had not continued to insist on illegal actions after all the explanations. Lesless (talk) 19:21, 4 April 2024 (UTC)
@Lesless: you have now at least twice accused Alachuckthebuck of "illegal" action. Please either make a clear accusation of what law of what country has been broken, or withdraw that accusation. - Jmabel ! talk 16:56, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Seeking VRT permissions where one has a doubt that an image has in it some "non-own-work elements", is not illegal. I don't see you trying to resolve this dispute on @Alachuckthebuck's talk-page and have directly raised an AN thread. I'd see this as a meritless request. ─ Aafī (talk) 17:13, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
This had been discussed on VladimirPF's talk page in this thread.
All the best - Chuck Talk 18:20, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Jmabel, since I already made a point about AGF above, it's possible Lesless miscommunicated that they believe Alachuckthebuck to be breaking site rules rather than stating a belief that the user is breaking laws. I do agree they should retract the statement if it was a miscommunication though.Abzeronow (talk) 17:34, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Jmabel, I don't know the exact equivalent in English. In Russian these are неправомерные требования (что Гугл переводит как “illegal demands”), well, something like “demands that do not comply with the rules”. Lesless (talk) 18:47, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
i think from https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:VladimirPF&oldid=865755982#File_tagging_File:Soap_dish_of_Novogrudok_Metal_Products_Plant_(6)_03.jpg it's very clear that the reported user's action is problematic.
i dont understand why some users are nitpicking non-native english speakers' choice of words rather than the reported user, either. RZuo (talk) 18:09, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
Yes, Alachuckthebuck should be more judicious in using "no permission" since VladmirPF appears to me to be the photographer and sole copyright holder. The images have EXIF, there is no evidence of copyright violation as far as the photograph itself, and the brand logo looks too simple to me for copyright. The soap dishes are a little more questionable as the pattern may be complex enough to have a copyright of their own but a "no permission" tag was still not appropriate. Abzeronow (talk) 19:01, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
@RZuo: I don't think I was nitpicking, though I certainly accept the clarification from the person who said it. There is a big line crossed when you use words that accuse someone of criminality, even if you do so through lack of fluency in the language you are using. - Jmabel ! talk 14:49, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
wikt:illegal#Adjective. RZuo (talk) 14:59, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
Fourth acception applies in this case. When I first read Lesless' use of the illegal word, I immediately thought of that. Bedivere (talk) 17:41, 6 April 2024 (UTC)
It’s a reasonable concern, but I do think we are looking at a communication misunderstanding in this case. I say this as a person who can only speak English - it’s admirable that Lesless can provide us with a translation in the first place! :-) - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 17:07, 8 April 2024 (UTC)

Hello, I would like to ask an interface admin to please remove the CSS overrides that make UW more responsive in MediaWiki:Gadget-uploadWizardMobile.css. @Sannita (WMF): Would you mind clarifying what you want? Do you want the gadget uploadWizardMobile removed from MediaWiki:Gadgets-definition? Alternatively, do you want something else, like MediaWiki:Gadget-uploadWizardMobile.css blanked, deleted, or edited? If that is the case you can specify the changes you would like to have done at MediaWiki talk:Gadget-uploadWizardMobile.css via {{Edit request}}, although if you mention what you want done here I'll see it. By the way, does this mean that phab:T261589 has been assigned to someone? —RP88 (talk) 05:54, 16 April 2024 (UTC)

Blacklist this Flickr account Erdonzello

Dear Admins,

Can someone please place this Erdonzello flickr account: https://www.flickr.com/people/193751847@N03/ on a blacklist. It is just full of FLICKRwashing images (from its first to almost the last page) WHICH ARE FREELY LICENSED and I have had to launch two Deletion Requests on it.

Please see This DR and This DR Best, --Leoboudv (talk) 22:23, 20 April 2024 (UTC)

✓ Done - I've addressed those DRs and added 193751847@N03 to COM:QFI. Please note, however, that this list does not work the way you appear to think it does ("Right now, anyone can pass images from this flickr account if they wanted to...which is crazy"). All this list does is prevent Flickrreviewbot from automatically reviewing images; the bot instead tags the image for manual review. That "anyone can pass images from this flickr account" will always be true (where "anyone" means license reviewer or admin) regardless of whether a Flickr account is on the list or not. In the past, I have requested creation of specific tags for each OpenRefine minor version: openrefine-3.7, openrefine-3.8 and so on. Speedy deletion review

Can I have a second opinion on the speedy deletion of File:Atago fukaya factory.jpg and File:Atago fukaya factory 2.jpg? They were speedy-deleted without standard user talk page notification. If "no license" was the problem, I think the uploader could have added one, if notified. There were other procedural problems (unexplained removal of source information) that make the SD requests seem less valid.

Unless it turns out the files had other obvious problems than "no license", such as blatant copyright violation, I might suggest having a regular deletion discussion. If COM:UDEL is more appropriate, I'm happy to bring it to there. whym (talk) 08:39, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

@Whym: This wasn't done over-speedily: it sat marked for a week. At any time during that it could have been turned to a regular DR, but it's a bit late for that.
At this point I believe we would have to go through an undeletion request, which would be entirely reasonable.
Originally it was claimed as "own work". That was removed by the nominator without explanation. It had a license completely compatible with the claim of "own work". No one indicated why "own work" was doubted. - Jmabel ! talk 14:22, 27 April 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the advice, Jmabel. Will Krd change mind in light of this? I just thought that if there was a simple mistake or something, they might want to have the chance to undo it first. If not, I'm happy to move onto a proper undeletion request. whym (talk) 03:13, 29 April 2024 (UTC)

Copyright infringement as Media of the Day

The current movie that's the Media of the Day "is a 1958 American comedy-drama film of Erskine Caldwell's 1933 novel of the same name." That is, if the underlying work is still copyrighted (ala many deletions of Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck), then the film is protected, at least in the derivative parts. Erskine Caldwell's 1933 novel was renewed, with renewal id R256172, and thus the movie will be under copyright until at least 1933+96, or 2029. Weather at Commons

It's not directly an admin issue, but as admins are expected to moderate discussions here, or at least stop users from getting carried away.

I get the impression that the weather at Commons is somewhat bad these days for professional photographers. Some users who may consider that commercial photography is not a profession, craft or art to practice seem to work hard towards what might actually drive them away to other platforms. The same may eventually make use loose GLAMs who less directly benefit from contributing here, but are also paid for their work. Enhancing999 (talk) 14:35, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

Is there an example where admins acted in an unfriendly way in discussions? There are often different options on certain topics but the language in discussions is mostly respectful. GPSLeo (talk) 17:53, 28 April 2024 (UTC)

The community chose admins to moderate discussions around here. So they can't really do much more. It's for admins to ensure the weather doesn't become bad for our core contributors, preferably (moderately) friendly. Enhancing999 (talk) 09:26, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
If there is a person or persons you think has done something wrong, please be specific, preferably with diffs. No one can respond usefully to a vague statement that the atmosphere here feels hostile. - Jmabel ! talk 02:13, 29 April 2024 (UTC)
i just wanna say:
  1. sysops are entrusted with only 3 additional buttons: delete, protect and block.
  2. sysops are not "moderators of discussions". those 3 buttons are technical, nothing to do with "moderating discussions".
  3. if every user uses commons sense and etiquette, there is no need to moderate.
  4. if it's really necessary to have someone "moderate", any reasonable user (instead of only sysops) can voluntarily do that.

Why am I banned from using the Crop Tool?

For reasons that I do not understand, it has been impossible for me to use the Crop Tool since the end of last year (2023). Whenever I want to use it, I am asked to authorize it first, and when I do so, I am asked again to authorize it first, etc. I am stuck in authorization hell and cannot have access to the tool. Now, why is that? Who banned me, and for what reason? Edelseider (talk) 10:51, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

Before I went inactive and lost my administrative rights, I remember seeing a little rubbish bin icon in connection with speedy deletion templates, which when clicked would take me to the page's &delete tab with a prefilled deletion rationale. @Mdaniels5757: So why does our template not take any parameters?   — 🇺🇦Jeff G. please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 00:09, 2 May 2024 (UTC)
@Jeff G. Because attribution doesn't need to be in the template; it just needs to be "conspicuously and appropriately" on "each copy". XXXtentacion - dubious license

These two photos of en:XXXtentacion: File:Xxxtentacion mugshot.jpg (480x640 pix) and File:Look at Me!.jpg (3k x 3k pix) have a source of "Florida Dept. of Corrections". The 3k x 3k resolution and image quality is far higher than what I found on Florida's offender search engine. Photos there are small, often grainy, out of focus, and harsh lighting and shadows. The photo, to me, appears to be a photoshoot. I did a search on XXXtentacion (as "Jahseh Dwayne Ricardo Onfroy", "Jahseh Onfroy" or "Onfroy" only) on that search engine and did not get any hits. A google image search of Look at Me!.jpg (will link work later?) returns numerous hits, many using "mug shot". Is this a valid license? Thanks Adakiko (talk) 18:51, 5 May 2024 (UTC)

The link is broken due to reasons beyond my comprehension. Jeff G. can explain better. I'm leaning towards no based on the lack of evidence for a release under a compatible license.

Help reverting a bad edit

I accidentally did a few bad structured data edits in an attempt to correct the depictions of a few images. I tried to undo the changes myself but was blocked by the abuse filter [ ref ]. So, it would be great if you could help with reverting those edits. Here's the list of changes:

Note: The MultiChillBot re-added the most of the structured data for the first one but the caption / image type still seem removed as far as I noticed. So, it might be better to revert the edit 🙂.

PS: To be honest, it is not actually an intentional bad edit. The Commons Android app has a bug that results in such bad edits when trying to edit depictions [ref] Kaartic [talk] 12:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)

@Ymblanter, @Jmabel In my experience, T&S usually issues a private conduct warning before they ban in those sorts of situations. Some users have gotten more than one conduct warning before being banned. They should inform you when they resolve a report you submitted (by issuing a conduct warning, ban, or with no further action), but historically have not always done this well especially if similar conduct was reported by multiple people at the same time. I would encourage you to reply to the ticket and ask for an update, and if this does not work email ca@ directly to ask for an update. I noticed that many of us forgot to mark vandalism edits as patrolled after they reverted them manually or though undo. This results in double work when they are checked twice. So please make sure to not forget this step after the cleanup. And to those who do not know the tool: There is a script that adds an one click button to patrol all revisions of a page MediaWiki:PatrolPageRevisions.js. GPSLeo (talk) 16:19, 17 May 2024 (UTC)

Non-translation “translations” on Commons:FAQ/bn

Commons:FAQ/bn is seemingly 99% translated, but in fact many of these “translations” are just copies of the English texts. This causes several issues:

  • Readers who look at the translation percentage think that they can read the page without knowing English, but this isn’t true;
  • Readers using accessibility software like screenreaders don’t get appropriate markup, since the Translate extension thinks these parts of the text are translated;
  • When a part of the text changes in English, it doesn’t get updated on the translation page because the extension thinks the translation, albeit outdated, is still more useful for readers than the English original (which would be true if it really was a translation, but not in this case).

Of course, the best solution would be actually translating those texts, but in case no Bangla speaker volunteers for that, at least the non-translation “translations” should be deleted. To do so, go to https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Translate&group=page-Commons%3AFAQ&action=page&language=bn, and for each row where the right (translation) column contains obviously English text:

  • click anywhere on the row;
  • click on the unit name (e.g. Translations:Commons:FAQ/4/bn);
  • click on History;
  • now you’re on the page history of a wiki page, just delete it like any other wiki page. You may want to check the page history first, in case it previously had a proper translation, although none of the few I checked had.

Thanks in advance! —Tacsipacsi (talk) 09:36, 12 May 2024 (UTC)

Ping @Moheen who created these non-translations. GPSLeo (talk) 16:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
I know that. But there are always lots of things I have to do. I will shortly translate the remaining. Thanks for notifying me. ~Moheen (keep talking) 17:10, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
But why do you copy past the text? When viewing the page there will be the English text anyways if there is no translation. GPSLeo (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2024 (UTC)
Exactly. It’s okay if not the whole page is translated in one go – just don’t touch the translation units you don’t translate. The system is smart enough to put the English text where there is no translation – and even smarter than a human, because it does so in a more accessible way than simply copying and pasting the English text. And at the same time, the statistics are not misleading. —Tacsipacsi (talk) 21:38, 18 May 2024 (UTC)

Template:Trademarked

The Russian translation of the template begins as follows: "Это произведение содержит материал, который может быть субъектом законов о товарных знаках в одной или нескольких юрисдикциях". I suggest it amended because 'субъект' denotes 'person' in Russian legal language while trademarks are by no means persons.

Proposed version: "Это произведение содержит материалы, которые могут подпадать под действие законов о товарных знаках в одной или нескольких юрисдикциях". Ur frnd (talk) 09:35, 19 May 2024 (UTC)

@Ur frnd: you can directly edit Template:Trademarked/ru and change it to your proposed version since it's not protected. —Matrix(!) {user - talk? - uselesscontributions} 17:25, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
